Unlike terrestrial AIS data, limited by a short-range of approximately 74 kilometers due to the earth’s curvature, satellite AIS data offers extensive coverage, capturing global maritime movements with no geographical constraints. What I also wonder is whether the new maritime satellite internet providers like “Starlink Maritime” or the likes of it, will eventually replace the current AIS system. I wonder how long before the AIS system becomes obsolete…
